VOENA's featured member of the month - our very first feature! - is Maija! Maija has been in VOENA for two and a half years. She is 15 years old, she's a soprano, and was recently invited to join Creavo. Here is what she had to say about VOENA:

What is your favorite color?Red :D

Favorite band/musician:Right now, either Geographer or Fun.

Do you play an instrument?Guitar, piano (sort of), and ukulele

What grade are you in? What’s your favorite subject at school?
I'm in 9th grade. I like Spanish, because it makes more sense than English and all we do is sing and write stories.

What are your future goals, i.e. what do you want to “be” when you grow up?I want to do any kind of work that allows me time to write and sing.

Favorite VOENA song?Definitely E Hatta! It's so intense! And Sofia hates it which makes me like it even more.

Favorite VOENA moment?Oy vey... Probably when Annabelle told us to "poop our songs."

How did you hear about VOENA? What made you want to join?I had actually been in prep for a season when I was 5, it was too much for me then, haha! My mother thought I would like it after someone gave us a flyer at Napa Valley Idol in 2011, and honestly I didn't want to go. Of course, I loved it from the first rehearsal!

What would you tell prospective VOENA members about joining? It's A TON OF WORK, but you can do it, and it is totally worth it!

What other interests do you have?

I love writing and making goofy faces. I also love drinking black coffee and Les Miserables.

Favorite place to visit? Anywhere with warm beaches!

Can you burp on command? No... I wish :(

Can you put your foot behind your head? Yes! Only with my right leg though!

Do you have any siblings? I have a genius brother who's 17.

Do you have any pets? I have a huge black poodle and a super awkward chihuahua-greyhound who is the cutest thing ever.

What’s your favorite movie and why? Mean Girls, because every single scene is so perfectly written and I have watched it over 50 times and I'm still not tired of it.

If you could dye your hair any color what would it be?Pastel purple! I actually tried that one time, it didn't work out quite the way I wanted to :(

What do you like about being a soprano? I love singing the descant parts because they layer so incredibly with the melody! It's a lot of pressure though, because up in that higher range, your pitch has to be PERFECT otherwise you'll sound like a puppy in pain.

What part would you sing if you were not a soprano?Alto 1, because that's right in the sweet spot of my range and the parts are the most challenging for me, because they're not the lowest, or the melody, or the highest, and I like the challenge!

Is Annabelle a genius?Honestly, yes. Even though she gets mad at us sometimes, I don't think I've ever had as much respect for someone I know as I have for Annabelle.

Favorite dessert?Anything with salted caramel!

Favorite food?Bacon :D

What hidden talent do you have that not many people know about?I can pull my innie bellybutton out so it becomes an outie. It's pretty weird.

What’s your pet peeve? I hate it when people breathe really loud.

If you could have any mythical creature as a pet, what would you choose? Hippogriffs are pretty cool!
